FAQ: CleanConvert™ for WordPerfect Documents opened in Microsoft Word

What is CleanConvert™?

CleanConvert™ quickly and reliably moves text, footnotes and graphics from a WordPerfect document that is opened in Microsoft Word – into a new Microsoft Word document:

  • Free of unnecessary section breaks
  • Free of confusing {Private} and other unfamiliar codes
  • The new Word document is clean, stable and will not cause problems in headers, footers or page numbering… and will not become a corrupted document!

CleanConvert™ is installed as a menu option in Microsoft Word.

How do I use CleanConvert™?

CleanConvert™ is designed to be used on a single WordPerfect document that you open in Microsoft Word. It is not designed for converting “batches” of files. You can use CleanConvert™ in as many WordPerfect documents as you wish to, but must use it on 1 document at a time.

  • In Microsoft Word, open a WordPerfect document.

NOTE: If WordPerfect files are not displayed in the File/Open dialog box, change option for Files of type to All Files (*.*) as shown above

  • Click the CleanConvert™ menu and select
    Run CleanConvert™ on this document
  • After CleanConvert™ has processed the document, the WordPerfect document is closed so that it remains a WordPerfect document without any changes saved.
  • Save the new Word document, or copy/move the content into an existing Microsoft Word document.

Does CleanConvert™ transform all format and features? Will the document look and print exactly like it did in WordPerfect?

After Microsoft’s built-in converter runs when a WordPerfect document is opened, CleanConvert™ does not do further conversion or formatting. Its purpose is to create a clean and stable Microsoft Word document:
  • Free of unnecessary section breaks
  • Free of confusing {Private} and other unfamiliar codes
  • Free of potentially fatal embedded codes in file pretext that can cause the document to become corrupted
  • New, clean header and footer with no page numbering – since it is safer to create new headers, footers and page numbers, or to copy the converted text into an existing document that already has headers, footers and page numbering set up.
  • The new document maintains the original document's Page Setup that was established on Page 1 -- margins, header & footer size, paper size (letter, legal, A4, etc), and orientation (portrait, landscape). Therefore, Page Setup information established at Page 1 in the WordPerfect document is maintained throughout the new document in MS Word.

What if an error occurs when I open a WordPerfect document in Microsoft Word?

Microsoft’s built-in converter runs automatically when you open a WordPerfect document in Microsoft Word. If there are problems with the WordPerfect document, the following symptoms may occur:

l    The text that follows a graphic image in the document is missing.
l    Message appears: "Document appears to be corrupt. Conversion may be incomplete."

Using CleanConvert™ does not help this problem.

This information is provided from Microsoft’s support article, Q275942:

CAUSE
This problem occurs because the WordPerfect file converter in Microsoft Word cannot convert some WordPerfect graphics files that are embedded in WordPerfect documents that were created in WordPerfect version 6.1 or later.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, open the document in WordPerfect, and then remove the graphic before you try to open the document in Microsoft Word. Then, after you save the document as a Microsoft Word document, insert the graphic into the appropriate location.
